Wishlist feature
Ask for a wishlist update without giving yourself away
When someone’s wishlist is empty or out of date, tap Ask for an update. They see how many people asked, never who, and everyone who asked hears back when the list changes. Free on every plan.
When the list you were counting on runs dry
A birthday is two weeks away, and the wishlist you planned to shop from has two items, both bought last year. Asking the person straight out gives the game away: the moment you ask what they want, they know a present is coming from you, and often roughly what.
Ask for an update solves that in one tap. The person gets a nudge that says how many people would love some fresh gift ideas, not who. When they add, change or remove a wish, or say their list is already up to date, everyone who asked hears about it, and the new wishes are marked so you can spot them. From there it’s the wishlist you know: claim a gift quietly, or team up on a bigger one with your group.
How asking works for everyone
One tap for you, a number for them, and news when the list changes.
One tap, nothing to explain
Open someone’s wishlist from one of your groups and tap Ask for an update. On an empty list the button reads Ask Maya to add wishes, with their own name. Changed your mind? Withdraw the ask any time before it’s answered.
They only see a number
The person whose wishlist it is sees “3 people asked you to update your wishlist” on their wishlist page and a count on their My Wishlist tab. They never see who asked or from which group, so nothing hints at who’s buying what.
Your group sees who else asked
Like claims, other members of the group you asked from see your name and photo next to the ask, so you know who else is shopping. Asks from other groups show only as a count. In Secret Santa groups nobody sees who asked, so asking can’t give away who has whom.
You hear back when it changes
Adding, changing or removing a wish answers every ask, and so does tapping It’s up to date. A few minutes after their first change, everyone who asked gets one notification, such as “Maya added 2 wishes”, and the new wishes are marked New on the list for two weeks.
How to ask for a wishlist update
From an empty list to fresh gift ideas.
- Step 1
Open their wishlist from a group
Go to one of your groups and tap the person to open their wishlist. Asking works from a group, the same as claiming.
- Step 2
Tap Ask for an update
They see that someone would love fresh gift ideas, and how many people asked, never who. If their notifications are on, they get one too.
- Step 3
Hear back and pick a gift
When they update their list or confirm it’s up to date, you get a notification. Open the list, look for the New marks and claim what you’ll buy.
Made for keeping surprises
Everything about asking is designed so the gift stays a secret.
Anonymous to them
The person whose list it is sees how many asked, never who or from which group.
Visible to your group
Members of the group you asked from see who else is waiting for an update, so you can plan together.
Safe in Secret Santa
In Secret Santa groups, names are hidden from everyone, so asking your person can’t give you away.
New wishes stand out
Wishes added since you asked are marked New, and the button tells you how many there are.
One notification, not ten
A whole editing session becomes one message to you. They get at most one a day from each person asking.
Free on every plan
Asking for updates, and the notifications about them, cost nothing on Free or Pro.
Frequently asked questions
Will they know I asked for an update?
No. The person whose wishlist it is only sees how many people asked, never who or from which group. Other members of the group you asked from can see your name next to the ask, the same way they see claims. In Secret Santa groups, nobody sees who asked.
What counts as updating a wishlist?
Adding a wish, removing one, or changing a wish’s name, description, links or photos. Reordering on its own doesn’t count. If nothing needs to change, they can tap It’s up to date, and you’re told the list is current.
How will I know the wishlist was updated?
With notifications on, you get one a few minutes after their first change, for example “Maya added 2 wishes”. Wishes added since you asked are marked New on their list for two weeks. Without notifications, open their wishlist to see what’s new.
Can I ask more than once?
You can ask again once your earlier ask has been answered, and withdraw an ask before it is. To keep it friendly, the person gets at most one notification a day from each person asking, and an ask withdrawn within a minute sends nothing.
Do I need notifications turned on?
No, but they help. Notifications work on the website, as an installed web app and in the Android app; on iPhone, add GiftCrew to your Home Screen first. You can turn these notifications off with the Wishlist updates switch in Settings.
Can I ask for updates to an event wishlist?
Yes. On an event’s page, guests can tap Ask for an update on the shared wishlist. The honorees see how many guests asked, never who, and any honoree’s change answers everyone. Other guests can see who asked.
